TO: NRA Gunsmithing Students
FROM: Lassen Community College NRA Gunsmithing School
SUBJECT: GSS 123 Basic Arms Engraving

Welcome to the NRA summer school for Basic Hard Metal Engraving.

This course is designed to provide a foundation for beginning gun and knife engravers, those who may need a refresher or updating, and those who are crossing over from another specialty of hand engraving. Artistic ability and great eyesight are not requirements – both can be augmented by today’s technology.

We will use basic hammer and chisel style engraving as well as utilizing all of the modern power assisted hand engraving tools currently on the market. There are still those who engrave at Renaissance Faires and black powder shoots who are required to engrave with the tools of the era.

We will begin on one “soft” metal plate, and then spend the majority of the time working in mild steel. For those want to try it, there will also be 410 stainless and some tool steel practice plates available.

There is a course outline and a tool list that follows. I will have graver blanks, practice plates, and beginner level projects in the form of buckles and folding knives available for you to purchase as needed. These are sold at my cost.

Bring any tools that you may already have as well as images, photos, illustrations, or drawings of what you’d like to be able to do. Also bring any work or images of work you may have done prior to this class.

If you have power engraving tools please bring them along with air lines, fittings, extension cords and adapters. Power diamond lap sharpening systems and graver holding fixtures that you could share with a fellow student would be especially welcome.

The college will provide a simple vise, but if you already have an engraving block or other holding and fixturing tools please bring those too.

Since this is my first time teaching this particular course, as well as teaching it at Lassen – there may be a bit of a learning curve involved for me too! Have a little patience and we’ll get over the hump without much effort.

Due to the space available as well as my own physical and materials limitations this class will be limited to 12 pre-registered students – so hurry up and register! If you decide you will need one of the pre-packaged kits listed under the tool requirements, please let me know as soon as possible. Instructor@jewelryartschool.com or 209-477-0550
