SUBJECT: GSS 98.08 Custom Built 1911
Welcome to the NRA seminars for Customizing Colt type Auto Pistols.
This is going to be a very busy time for us all and I want to let you
know what you will need for the class so that we can get a running
start at things.
You will need to bring a Colt or Springfield Armory auto pistol. We
suggest that you stick with Colt or Springfield Armory If you can,
other brands have often been found to be off dimensionally making
fitting much more difficult. I want you to bring a complete pistol
since this is what you will see most often come through your shop for
If you have any particular problems or concerns please call me at 847-487-7776.

Thank you for your interest in taking this class. I hope you will find it
rewarding and informative. In this letter I will explain briefly my
background in gunsmithing, recommended pistols to work on and those to avoid,
and the topics the class will cover.
In class we will focus on accurizing your pistol and how to obtain an optimum
trigger pull on the gun you are using. We will also discuss reliability and
what sights and optics are appropriate. Compensator installation and fit,
tuning and ergonomics will also be covered.
In order to streamline the class time, please fax to me a description of the
specific project you want to work on and a list of the parts you may already
have. This will be to insure that you have all the required parts to do the job.
If a fax is not available, please call. Before calling please prepare a list of
parts in advance in order to save time. I will have available in class for you
to purchase Krebs Custom barrels in either 40 or 45 ACP and Krebs Custom compensators.
I will also have Videcki triggers. These parts will be offered at my cost.
The correct pistol to bring to class will be almost any model 1911 or 2011 that
you would like to accurizing and tighten. I recommend any of the Colt or
Springfield Armory or Kimber models, anything with a Chip McCormick frame, any
model 2011 such as STI or SVI.
Pistols to avoid include any Essex frame, any Ranger model, early models of Auto
Ordnance, any Safari Arms or AMT.
I earned my professional gunsmithing certificate from Lassen College, training
with Mr. Bob Dunlap. I am pleased to be offered this opportunity to come back
here to teach this class. Since the time I graduated from Lassen, I have worked
for fourteen years as a general gunsmith and six additional years custom
pistolsmithing. I specialize in USPSA and IPSC model 1911ís for competition.
I am also a member of the American Pistolsmithing Guild.
It is my hope you will enjoy and benefit from this class as much as I will.
